For today’s post about Social Media and Pole, I want to discuss creating your own unique space so that your voice isn’t lost in the online sea.  There is so much pole content that you can feel like a drop in the bucket. I think there are two approaches to being heard, neither are “right” or “wrong” but each lead to different experiences and results.

1. The Firehose.  If you literally flood the market with info, some of it will stick.  You will undoubtedly reach a ton of people by sheer volume.  You may become a “household name” in the pole world.  The challenge here is that if you repeat info or don’t engage people, they will block you because you will become spam.  So perhaps your strategy would be to give out bite-sized bits of info that people think of as snacks (at best). This seems HARD to do well and I think it would take a lot of time.  I’ve only seen it done well from a couple of pole personalities and they don’t make every post about pole – most people don’t have enough pole content in their lives to update something new daily, so it ends up being about lifestyles in general.

2. The Provocation.  Initiate some kind of meaningful response in people.  Give people content THEY care about and slow down the frequency.  It doesn’t have to be life-changing, but it does have to make them stop and think.  Anything from twice a week to twice a month seems good to me.  Less frequent and you might drop from the front of their minds, but with good content they will look forward to your updates.  Do you love to share tricks?  Don’t just post a 1 minute video of you doing the trick – show them three ways to get into it or out of it, or how to modify it for lower or higher skill levels.  Break it down by showing what exercises would help them conquer it.  Ask them to share a video response.  Engage them.  Do you sell a product?  Don’t just tell them it’s for sale – show them why their lives would be great if they had your product. Ask them to show off wearing/using the product. Be creative with a reward for them using several of your product.  Engage them.

The gist of it is that you can be loud or you can be personal.  Walk into a room shouting and people will hear you; a few will decide to pay attention, but most will think “jackass.”  If enough people hear you and pay attention, it might be worth it to you to disregard the people you alienated.  But walk into a room and start a conversation with a single person or two and really get to know them and enrich each others’ lives – well that’s called a relationship and in the world of social media and even commerce, and dare I say Life,  that’s gold.
