Oh Social Media – you’re so … vast.

This month, the Pole Dancing Bloggers Association (PDBA) has the topic of Social Media for its blog hop.  The intro post had so many inspiring topics that I decided I couldn’t pick just one.  The very observant of you may have already noticed that the #1 in the title of this means there will be more than one.  Well done, you internet sleuth!

So today I’ll focus on how social media has affected the pole dancing industry. Social media includes facebook, twitter, blogs (blogger/wordpress/tumblr), instagram, pinterest, youtube, linkedin, forums and more.

I only have an active online pole presence on facebook and youtube, plus here on my wordpress blog.  I have accounts on several forums but I’m not active on them.

I think the internet has been insanely awesome for the pole dancing industry and I think social media is a large part of that.  Pole is now more widely available and more widely accepted because of it.

A website is fabulous as both a portfolio of what you offer and as a way to drive sales, but it’s usually one-sided.  Even if your clients and potential clients could interact with you on your site, it’s YOU they are interacting with, not so much each other.  It’s very focused on one business at a time, usually for the purpose of bringing that company more business.

Social media, if done well, is FOR the audience and often BY the audience.  The point of it is for people (which can include businesses) to engage with each other, and it does a great job of that.  Each platform has pros and cons and I couldn’t even try to come up with a perfect platform, but here are a few tips to help you narrow down where to spend your online time. These are super over-generalized, by the way!

  • Facebook – if you like reading short “news” stories from friends and celebrities that may include photos and may have a fair bit of advertising (unsolicited AND from your liked connections), and you want to comment/engage, this is for you. (Example)
  • Twitter – if you like more frequent bite-sized updates from those you follow, this is for you. (Example)
  • Blogs – if you like long narratives on everything from the emotional journeys of polers to product reviews and opinion pieces on how you should eat, this is for you. (Example – um, you’re lookin’ at it.)
  • Instagram – if you like self portraits (“selfies”), often artistically styled, this is for you. (Example)
  • Pinterest – if you like bulletin boards or scrapbooks of images, this is for you. (Example)
  • YouTube – if you like videos, this is for you. (Example)
  • LinkedIn – if you like professional networking, this is for you. (Example)
  • Forums – if you like searchable, threaded discussions, this is for you. (Example)

Some of these “push” information to you (through notifications or email), others are passive, so you have to check for new content.

I think all of them have value and it all depends on what you’re interested in finding online about pole and how you like to connect with others. I’d say the biggest ones are facebook and youtube (dance does lend itself to video).
